Great New Posters for ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘The Tree of Life’

Two of the movies I’m most looking forward to this year are Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II and Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, and whaddaya know, they’ve both just unveiled terrific new posters. First up, we’ve got the Harry Potter poster:

Harry and Voldemort, bloodied and covered in grime, staring each other down while Voldemort holds the Elder Wand between them? Yeah, that’s enough to get me pumped. And of course, what better tagline than “It all ends 7.15”? I remember when the final book came out, it felt like a momentous moment in my life, having grown up with the books and its characters. The weight of the movies ending hasn’t hit me to the same degree, but I’m positive I’ll be misty-eyed come July 15.

Listen to Last Friday’s Gobbledygeek

Totally slipped my mind to make this post yesterday morning, so here we go: Friday’s Gobbledygeek, “Higher Education,” is available for listening right here. Fictional schools discussed are Sunnydale High, Greendale Community College, Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and many (seriously, many) others. No annoying tech problems this week, either! In the bonus hour, we talk about the DVD’s that will be out this Tuesday, the new direction the Batman comics are taking, and this season of True Blood so far (though largely spoiler-free, since Kevin hasn’t started the season yet, and we wanted to be all considerate-like). PAUL: Toothless (How to Train Your Dragon)

In my opinion, the character’s progression throughout the film is pretty spot-on with what feels like natural behavior, from the frightened, wounded animal in the cove to the trusting “pet” that accepts help from his human to ultimately the loyal friend and protector.

AJ: Rick Blaine (Casablanca)

Humphrey Bogart is one of the greatest actors of all time, and no role better defines his appeal than that of expatriate café owner Rick Blaine.

New ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ Trailer

Are you ready to get chills?

“Why do you live?” “Because I have something to live for.”

Yeah, you got chills.

As I’ve said before, I’ve been lukewarm on the latter films in the series, but I thought Half-Blood Prince was a step in the right direction and I’m really hoping that David Yates can bring everything to a satisfying close. This trailer is certainly promising, with plenty of thrills, tears, and wonderful photography.

Man, I’m having to relive the end of Harry Potter all over again. I can’t believe it’s been nearly a decade since the first movie, and 13 years since the first book. Wow. The times, they are a-changin’…

Peeks at Scott Pilgrim and Harry Potter from the MTV Movie Awards

It’s that time again, folks. New footage from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has been released, which means by all laws of god and man, I must post about it. This clip is of Scott taking on world famous action star Lucas Lee (Chris Evans, in the role that might finally win me over)–also one of Ramona’s evil exes–and his stunt team:

It’s really hard for me to describe anything about this movie without launching into hyperbole, which may pose a problem when I actually review the thing, but…um…was that freaking fantastic, or was it not? Correct answer: IT WAS. Oh yes, it most certainly was. Not only does Michael Cera actually get to kick ass, but we see that Edgar Wright has perfectly nailed the books’ sense of humor (even if the fight with Lucas was radically different on the page). And I’m inclined to agree with Entertainment Weekly that Kieran Culkin may even have stolen the spotlight with his pitch-perfect delivery of, “Hey, ask them how it feels to get always get the sloppy seconds.”
